Nation Building Our Way
"Nation Building Our Way" explores the history and resurgence of the Tŝilhqot’in Nation. It highlights the Tŝilhqot’in ancestors, known as the ʔesggidam, who thrived with strong governance and laws before the arrival of settlers. The book details the impact of colonization and the current efforts to reclaim jurisdiction over their lands, as recognized by the Supreme Court of Canada. The Tŝilhqot’in Nation is focused on revitalizing traditional governance, empowering its citizens through education and training, and creating economic opportunities through policy reform and political support. The work emphasizes the importance of strong governance and self-determination in nation building.
What happened and what we did
This book was crafted with a deep collaboration between the Tŝilhqot’in National Government's Communications Department and RDC. The design and pagination were thoughtfully developed to create a visually impactful presentation of the Tŝilhqot’in people's rich history and culture. The book uses powerful imagery to tell its story, showcasing the people, landscapes, and the resilience of the Tŝilhqot’in nation.
The design aims to reflect the depth and richness of Tŝilhqot’in culture, integrating visual elements that resonate with the reader. Each page is carefully laid out to ensure that the images and text work harmoniously, capturing the essence of the Tŝilhqot’in people and their journey. This approach not only makes the book visually appealing but also enhances the storytelling, making the history and achievements of the Tŝilhqot’in come alive for the reader.
Powerful and evocative images
Incorporating both historical and contemporary photographs, the book provides a vivid portrayal of the Tŝilhqot’in Nation. Photography was provided by a variety of people, including a number of images captured on location by photographer Frank Vena and design director Rod Roodenburg of RDC. The images are complemented by well-crafted narratives that offer insights into the traditional governance systems, the impact of colonization, and the ongoing efforts towards self-determination and nation building. This combination of visuals and text creates a compelling and immersive experience, inviting readers to understand and appreciate the resilience and strength of the Tŝilhqot’in people.
